The Legend of Zelda series has always been about the protagonist Link over the years, who has been a male. However, upon the reveal of the first trailer for the now named The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild a few years ago, people at first thought the new Link might be a girl. That was confirmed not to be true, but many rumors as of recent led us to believe that we may have the option to choose a female link in the upcoming game, but that has been revealed to be false.
The fact that the stream for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild didn’t mention anything about choosing a gender for Link at the beginning has us wondering, as you would think that would be a killer feature to mention.
GameSpot got a chance to sit down with series producer Eiji Aonuma this afternoon and sadly he confirmed that we would not be getting a female playable character in the game.
His explanation for this was that if they were going to have a female playable character, it would have to be Zelda rather than just a female Link. However, he said that doing this would take away from Link himself in the adventure because they would have no idea what to do with him instead.
“…if we have princess Zelda as the main character who fights, then what is Link going to do? Taking into account that, and also the idea of the balance of the Triforce, we thought it best to come back to this [original] makeup.”
This is rather disappointing, but The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild still looks absolutely stunning in action and we can’t wait to play it when it releases in 2017 for Wii U and NX.
