Of the many things Matthew Mercer is well-known for, the creation of a new Dungeons and Dragons class is one of them. Voice-actor and Dungeon Master for the weekly Critical Role Livestream, Mercer has homebrewed much content that is featured on the game. A fan-favorite is his Blood Hunter class. But while it was originally patched together for a quick one-shot with a celebrity, it is now updated and perfected. And players that purchase it can support a bigger cause.

A movement on DMs Guild called Fight Fires With Games is raising money for the Australian bushfire relief effort. Its focus is to put part or all of the profits of DMs Guild items to the relief and give big savings for players in return. Mercer’s new 12-page download is available for $8.00, and 100% of the funds will go towards Australian relief.

The Blood Hunter class is based around the idea that a character will have to wound themselves and take damage to do certain abilities. It’s a specific type of arcane magic Mercer has dubbed hemocraft. It was originally created for a Dungeons and Dragons Oneshot with Vin Diesel that was referred to as D&Diesel. It was based around Diesels’ character in The Last Witch Hunter. Fans repeatedly requested a written version of the class from Mercer and he eventually gave in, although he states that he thought the product was far from perfect.

But now Mercer has released a 2020 version of the class on DMs Guild. He rebuilt it from the ground up, focusing on better balancing and a shift from Wisdom-based abilities to Intelligence-based ones. Within the last couple of years, Mercer has made some adjustments and updates as Critical Role cast member, Taliesin Jaffe, portrayed a Blood Hunter tiefling named Mollymauk.

Fans are pleased to consume more of Mercer’s creative imagination, and it is all the better that this Dungeons and Dragons fun also goes to helping people in need.
