Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is getting an official English translation this fall, with a September release date, Square Enix announced today during its E3 2018 press conference.
The announcement trailer, subtitled “The Legend of the Luminary,” explores a bit of what we’ll see in the game as fantastical new characters are introduced with a theme featuring “the captivating tale of a hunted hero.” While this is the eleventh game in the series, it’s a completely new standalone adventure, so you don’t need to have prior knowledge of Dragon Quest games to understand or appreciate this title.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age released in Japan last year on both PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Set in the fantasy world of Lotozetasia, it weaves a tale of The Great Tree of Life, or the source of all life within the universe. Players take on the role of a young man with a weird birthmark on his left hand. As part of a special coming-of-age rite, he must climb an enormous mountain called God’s Rock, where legend has it that spirits of the Earth remain. When he accomplishes this task, he finds out that he’s not actually who he appears to be, and he’s tasked with setting off on a mission to quell the forces of darkness before the resurrection of an enemy known as the “Dark One.”
The game is targeting a Sept. 4, 2018 release with a special “Edition of Light” version.
