Dragon Ball Z has never been too far from the limelight but truly jumped back into into the mainstream culture at a massive level once again with the release of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods a few years ago. Following up on that success, another movie was revealed that saw the return of the fan favorite Frieza with Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, which happened to release this past weekend. Now that the box office totals are in, we know that the movie was a smashing success.

According to Deadline, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F absolutely dominated the competition in Japan in its opening weekend with $8.4 million. This may seem rather small in comparison to the weekly numbers in the US, but for Japan that is a massive opening. So much in fact, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F had the best opening weekend of any movie in Japan so far in 2015.

Even more impressively is that this total is 43% higher than the opening weekend that Battle of the Gods had. Resurrection F even managed to beat out Furious 7, which came in first everywhere else in the world where it was opening. In comparison to other major anime movie franchises in the country, it even debuted better than last year’s latest Pokemon and Detective Conan movies as well, which always manage to do well in the box office.

Those in the US can expect to see Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F sometime this coming summer when it hits theaters. Stay tuned for more information on the limited dates for that run when Funimation reveals further details in the near future.
