With Dragon Ball FighterZ just two weeks away, it’s easy to forget that Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is still around and doing quite well — particularly on the Nintendo Switch. So well, in fact, that Bandai Namco has revealed that it is actually running out of stock in certain regions.
According to a recent announcement on Twitter, total sales for the Switch version of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 — including both physical and digital sales — have topped 500,000 copies worldwide.
Japan in particular seems to have taken quite a liking to Xenoverse 2 on the Switch and there is now a shortage of stock there. In light of this, Bandai Namco has asked fans to be patient and wait a little longer, as more copies of the game are planned to ship in early February.
In normal circumstances, a Dragon Ball title doing so well nowadays is hardly remarkable. However, what makes this milestone so noteworthy are the conditions under which it was achieved. First off, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 can hardly be considered a new title, as it was released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC back in Oct. 2016. Furthermore, the Switch version of the game came in Sept. 2017 — three months after Dragon Ball FighterZ was already made known to the public and highlighted at E3.
This means that not only did a new version of a nearly one-year old game sell well on a new console within the same generation, but it did so at a time when a new Dragon Ball title was already announced and made playable.
Of course, you can’t just say that Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 sold this well solely due to the IP. It being on the Nintendo Switch certainly helped, as did the motion controls that the new platform enabled.
In any case, with Xenoverse 2 doing so well on the Switch, it’s possible that Bandai Namco may seriously start looking at bringing Dragon Ball FighterZ there as well.
