Crunchyroll’s release of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is now projected to top domestic box office charts this weekend, according to a new report. The film scored an impressive $10.7 million on its opening day, which surpasses Pokémon: The First Movie’s $10.1 million on its opening day, making it the most successful anime film debut of all time domestically.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is the 21st and newest film based on the iconic Dragon Ball franchise by mangaka Akira Toriyama. Crunchyroll’s release of the film is expected to bring in $21 million from 3,007 locations across the nation, making it the most widespread and successful release from the distributor to date as the film is also available in several premium formats, such as Imax, 4DX and Dolby Cinemas.

This debut surpasses the previous Dragon Ball film, 2019’s Dragon Ball Super: Broly,  which only brought in $9.8 million domestically on its opening weekend, and is to the $18 million debut of Funimation’s Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie back in March. The film has already grossed approximately ¥2.4 billion (or $18 million) since opening in June in Japan.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Gohan, the son of Goku, and his friend/mentor, Piccolo, as they do battle against the once-thought defeated Red Ribbon Army and came face-to-face with a pair of incredibly powerful Androids that call themselves “Super Heroes.” The official synopsis reads:

“The Red Ribbon Army was once destroyed by Son Goku. Individuals who carry on its spirit have created the ultimate androids — Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. However, these two androids call themselves superheroes and start attacking Piccolo and Gohan.”

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero currently has a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes and has been praised for its blend of 2D and 3D animation, fight scenes, and fresh take on some of the series’ most well-known and beloved characters.
