It hasn’t even been released to the public, but DOTA 2 recently set a record on Steam for having the most concurrent players at once. Valve has been quietly expanding the DOTA 2 beta through the goodwill of others, allowing the community to pass invitations to their friends and acquaintances.
This weekend, DOTA 2 hit just under 300,000 players for Valve, which ousted the old leader, Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. DOTA 2 is currently in “beta”, but you wouldn’t be able to tell that if you’ve logged into the game recently. The community is bustling, the marketplace is thriving, and Valve’s plan to build a community that rivals that of Riot Games’ League of Legends is coming to fruition.
