id Software looks to make right what was wrong with DOOM 2016.

DOOM Eternal is going to have multiplayer that is developed internally this time around.  One of the weakest spots of the last DOOM game was in the contrast between how good the single player campaign side of the game was when compared to the PvP multiplayer mode.  There was a clear distinction in quality between the two modes in the last game, and id looks like they’ll be remedying this in DOOM Eternal.

Unfortunately, other than the fact that multiplayer in DOOM Eternal won’t be outsourced this time around, it’s hard to know what to expect from it.  Despite QuakeCon being the big gameplay reveal for the game, they did not have anything to share at this time, according to Marty Stratton during a Q&A.

What id did reveal is that there will be an Invasion multiplayer mode in DOOM Eternal.  This will allow real players to invade your campaign as demons and literally make your life more hellish than it already is.  When this option is turned on, this Invasion mode will add an unpredictable wrinkle to the DOOM single player experience.  Players will also be able to group up in what id is calling “Hunting Parties” and then invade other players games as a group.  Ouch.

It sounds like DOOM Eternal is definitely going to be a lot more ambitious than the last game when it comes to multiplayer features, but not everything is returning.  One of the things that the 2016 release of DOOM had that DOOM Eternal won’t have is SnapMap.  This set of tools that allowed builders to create levels will not be in the new DOOM game.  Instead, id says that they are focusing on the things that fans of DOOM wanted more of last time around, so expect to see a focus on single player DLC, and better multiplayer content.

Bethesda and id Software revealed the first gameplay for DOOM Eternal earlier today at the QuakeCon 2018 Keynote.  Check out the trailer above for your first look at DOOM Eternal.

DOOM Eternal does not have a release date but it will be coming to the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and Switch.
