I’m just going to say it, the Divinity: Original Sin series is one of the best things to happen in gaming over the last few years. The stunning series of isometric roleplaying games from Larian combine beautiful systems, fantastic world building and lore, amazingly fun characters, and stunning emergent gameplay into a combination that could satisfy anyone. And it looks like the third one is on the way.
Developer Larian’s website currently just shows a big three on it, and unless my ability at math has failed me utterly, that implies strongly that the third installment of these wonderful games is on the way.
It is honestly a little difficult to explain why the Divinity: Original Sin games are so good, but it largely boils down to the enormous sense of freedom that they give players. You can, quite literally, talk to anyone (or anything), go anywhere, and do whatever you like. It is entirely possible just to go full murder-hobo and kill everything you see without messing up the game. Four-person co-op leads to some of the greatest fun I have ever had in a game, as an errant fireball can cause a barrel to explode and kill a friend. Or, if you like, you can just poison them to death for the fun of it.
The last game even came with a Dungeon Master Mode, allowing you to build your own content and campaigns, and share them with the world. Frankly, as an old school tabletop RPG nerd, it is the game I always wanted when I was younger, the near-perfect realization of the freedoms that tabletop gaming brings.
If a third one is on the way, that is some of the best news I will have heard today. I will keep you updated as more details are made available.
