Disney has confirmed the release of a new co-op platformer during the Disney and Marvel Games Showcase, Disney Illusion Island, starring Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy. The game will release exclusively for Nintendo Switch in 2023.
A Closer Look at Disney Illusion Island
Disney Illusion Island will be a multiplayer platformer that will see Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy out on a brand new adventure. Players can choose between any one of the four for co-op. The game is part of the same video gaming series that includes Disney Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse and will release next year exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, sporting a cartoonish art style.
They were shown with various abilities in the new trailer, with Mickey being able to bounce off of walls, Minnie having a grapple hook-like item, Donald being able to swim, and Goofy using condiments of some kind to float in stages. It remains to be seen what other abilities they will have access to, but it was emphasized that working together as a team was a major aspect of the gameplay.
The game appears to be a remake of a conceptual, discontinued game from 2016. When Disney shut down its internal games development and publishing arm, a project made by indie studio Dlala ended up going unreleased.
It supposedly involved a reboot of one of Disney’s biggest IPs. It would have been a four-player couch co-op platformer similar to a Metroidvania, which appears to be the style Disney Illusion Island is going for.
Dlala ended up signing a $3.5 million deal to get the game made with Disney, but when Disney exited publishing, Dlala’s was canceled along the way. Went with it after a year and a half of work.
Now, Dlala appears to be back working with Disney for this new game.
