If you were hoping to see director Quentin Tarantino’s last movie be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, consider your hopes dashed. Tarantino will never direct a Marvel movie, and he’s got a bit of a harsh reason why. When asked why he wouldn’t do a Marvel or DC film in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Tarantino responded, “You have to be a hired hand to do those things. I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job.” In a way that echoed Martin Scorsese’s criticism of superhero films, which he said weren’t real cinema but theme park attractions, Tarantino had further criticisms of Marvel and the superhero movie genre.

Director Quentin Tarantino is Hoping Marvel Movies Fall Out of Favor

In the LA Times interview, Tarantino referred to a filmmaking era in which anti-establishment auteurs were thrilled when studio musical adaptations went out of style. Tarantino recently revealed his list of the seven films he thinks are perfect and said modern filmmakers “can’t wait for the day they can say that about superhero movies.” If Tarantino’s arsenal of films shows us anything, it’s that he is not into mainstream establishment filmmaking. His films consistently challenge filmmaking norms, and he doesn’t seem interested in doing what is popular.

Regardless of whether you agree with his views on DC and Marvel movies, you can’t argue with the fact that Tarantino is correct to say he isn’t looking for a job. With nine successful films, numerous screenwriting and acting credits, and two Oscars, Quentin Tarantino is doing just fine. And as he prepares to make his last film as a director before turning his attention to writing, it seems he wants to stick to his own original style and not go out with something as mainstream as a Marvel movie.
