Character gone? How to fix the ‘character deleted’ bug plaguing Diablo 2: Resurrected.
Diablo 2: Resurrected has, unfortunately, had a rocky launch, with a substantial amount of bugs affecting many players. One of these bugs results in the player’s character being deleted, completely gone from the character select screen with no warning, as if the character never existed, with seemingly no fix. Unfortunately, this mostly appears to be a server-side issue that usually isn’t fixable by the user. Blizzard claimed that the bug has been fixed, however, users are still reporting the issue as rampant. Live maintenance of Diablo 2: Resurrected has recently concluded, which may have fixed the issues for some users. However, there are a few steps you can attempt to resolve this issue should it not have been fixed for you.
How to Fix Deleted Character Bug in Diablo 2: Resurrected
The first step we need to take, if you find your character is gone, is to make sure you have clicked on the ‘Offline’ tab. Diablo 2: Resurrected automatically defaults to the ‘Online’ tab, meaning the character selection screen will look blank if you only have offline characters. If this isn’t the case, the next step is to log out of the game and completely close Battle.net, making sure the application has completely terminated in Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc). Relaunch the game and check the character selection screen for your deleted character. If it hasn’t reappeared, the only thing you can do is wait until Blizzard has implemented a bug fix
Diablo 2: Resurrected Bugs
Diablo 2: Resurrected has launched with a plethora of game-breaking bugs, many of which were carried over from the beta version of the game. Other than the ‘character deleted’ bug, some major glitches include: players being locked out of their characters (See here on how to potentially fix character lockout), an AVX issue that prevents players from launching the game, crashes on Nintendo Switch and players being unable to start online games. Recently, a live maintenance to attempt to fix some of these bugs has concluded, although this has resulted in some players having characters completely stuck in closed games.
