Destiny fans are getting some welcome relief from FOMO in the latest expansion to Destiny 2 next week. Bungie, the game’s developer, has revealed a new process by which players can earn rare weapons they have missed out on for one reason or another.
Back in June this year Bungie announced that some portions of Destiny 2 would be removed from the game and placed into the so-called “Destiny Content Vault.” The stated aim of this process was to reduce the file size of Destiny 2 on all platforms and to streamline Bungie’s development pipeline by allowing them to focus on a smaller slice of content at any given time. As would be expected, the Destiny player community was and continues to be concerned over the shrinking of the game’s world, notably because of the role that loot plays in the experience.
In Destiny 2 there are basically two types of Exotic weapons at the highest tier of the games rarity strata. Some Exotics come from a season pass and those that are earned through a quest or activity. It was always possible to skip a season of Destiny and miss out on a pass reward and now, with the vaulting process, parts of the game necessary to complete some weapon quests will be gone making them impossible to earn.
Bungie’s answer to this concern is the new Monument to Lost Lights Exotic Archive. This kiosk in Destiny 2’s social space, The Tower, will let you use in-game resources to buy the Exotic weapons you might have missed. The latest update on the process states that ”Players will need an amount of Glimmer, destination materials, masterworking materials, and an Exotic Cipher or Ascendant Shard to purchase the Exotic or Legendary which they desire”. Active Destiny players will take special note of the Exotic Cipher requirement as until now that particular currency basically only came sparingly from season pass rewards.
With the Beyond Light expansion, you will have a chance to earn more of this rare currency by completing quests from Xur, the enigmatic vendor who appears at random locations throughout the game every weekend. Bungie is also adding another currency to Destiny 2 called Spoils of Conquest, which will replace the various raid currencies and be used to purchase raid related gear from the Monument to Lost Lights. There is currently no information on the pricing for the various guns getting vaulted but given that Bungie has stated a desire to match the new system’s challenge to the original quests, you can expect weeks of grinding to earn currency for the kiosk.
On top of the new Exotic kiosk, Bungie is adding a Quest Archive to the game. Also located in the Tower social space, the new Archive will collect any quests players have deleted from their character’s quest list. Previously these quests would appear in the inventory of one of the game’s various vendors so consolidating them is a pretty simple quality of life improvement.
