The Leviathan is back in the opening mission of Destiny 2‘s Season of the Haunted. The mission provides enormous levels of lore and story implications as we see the same plaguing Darkness corruption Guardians encountered in last year’s Presage Exotic mission. Calus, also back, is communing with the Pyramid of the Moon, allowing phantoms to wander the halls of the now corrupted Leviathan. One of the ghosts players encounter, Safiyah, is presented as a mysterious new character with more story importance than first meets the eye.

Who is Safiyah in Destiny 2?

The strange and mysterious tour guide you meet when first exploring the ruined Leviathan is this same Safiyah. Of all the characters in Destiny 2, Zavala seems the most taken aback by the appearance of Safiyah. As Guardians learned in Season of the Splicer, Safiyah is indeed the long-dead mortal wife of Zavala, an old lover. In a brief passage of lore text attached to one of the new Exotic ships in Season of the Haunted: Tymbal Lucidae, one can delve into a scene where Zavala dreams of his wife and son, Hakim and Safiyah, after requesting that his Ghost play a specific music track before he falls asleep his office. Zavala enjoys a nice dream consisting of the family in a meadow beside a cozy campfire. It is not explicitly said if this is a memory or a dream, but one can easily tell that this is from times past for the Awoken Titan.

Destiny 2 Season of the Haunted Update Patch Notes

It is still unclear what happened to Safiyah, but since she was not an immortal light bearer like Zavala, it can be assumed that she lost her life tragically due to the inevitability of her mortality. Either way, Zavala shows massive guilt for what happened to her all the same, for the Pyramid would not have chosen her phantom to haunt him if it was not this way. This Season of the Haunted delves into characters’ emotional vulnerabilities, so Guardians can anticipate exploring the relationship between Zavala and Safiyah more as the season progresses.

Destiny 2 is available for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
