Leaks have revealed that Destiny 2 will be going free-to-play on September 17, the same day the new expansion, Shadowkeep, is due to launch. The core game itself will go free to play, while Shadowkeep and future expansions will be charged for. The core game will be called Destiny 2: New Light and will feature all Year One content.
The new update will also be designed to work just with the base game, and we can assume, the Year One content included in the free to play version. There are a couple of conflicting leaks at this point, as another leak hinted that people would be able to buy a bundle of the base game and Shadowkeep. If the game is going free-to-play, then this obviously won’t be necessary. There will also no longer be platform exclusive weapons, armor, or maps and activities, which is good news for the playerbase.
After a recent split from Activision, this appears to be Bungie trying to find the right place in the market for Destiny moving forward. Whether the model will stick firmly to a free-to-play base backed up by expansions, or whether we will someday see a Destiny 3 is not yet known. It is also rumored that the game will begin to offer a cross-save function, allowing players to play on any platform they will with the same Guardians and game progression.
