Alec Baldwin’s manslaughter charge may prove difficult to defend, according to a legal expert. Actor Alec is to defend his manslaughter charge very soon, and it may be difficult for him to walk away a free man. Get the details below.
Alec Baldwin Charged For Manslaughter
Hollywood star Alec Baldwin’s manslaughter charge may get him up to five years in prison for the October 2021 shooting death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
The 64-year-old was criminally charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter of Halyna in New Mexico on October 21, 2021. New Mexico First District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies released the charges in a press release on Thursday, January 19.
The release asks for 18 months in prison with an additional $5,000 fine for the first charge. However, according to the DA’s release, the second charge against Alec carries a mandatory five years in jail.
A bullet on the set of Rust fired from a prop gun hit and killed Halyna Hutchins at 42. Director Joel Souza suffered injuries after the incident, but he survived.
The DA’s office also charged Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer for the film. Hannah’s duties allegedly included ensuring the gun did not contain live bullets.
The film’s assistant director, David Halls, reached a plea deal and received a misdemeanor charge of the negligent use of a deadly weapon.
Alec Baldwin’s Manslaughter Charge Difficult To Defend
HollywoodLife spoke to Criminal defense and appellate attorney Matthew Barhoma, founder of Barhoma Law and Power Trial Lawyers. He explained why Alec’s decision to speak out about this over the past year might hurt his chances of defeating these charges.
The attorney explained that Alec believed he wouldn’t get charged based on his knowledge of how the law works. The actor put together his own statements and homemade videos, which can’t help him.
“They can only hurt him,” the attorney, who is familiar with New Mexico law, said.
Barhoma noted that Alec’s past videos could instead be used against him in court according to the evidence code.
Alec will be defending his manslaughter charge in court soon. Hopefully, justice takes its course, and everyone gets a fair sentence. Also, Alec Baldwin’s manslaughter charge may be difficult to defend but not impossible.
