Death Note is back after a 12-year hiatus. The new one-shot chapter is set to release on February 4th, 2020, in Jump SQ. Written by Tsugumi Ohba and drawn by Takeshi Obata, the chapter will have an 87-page spread in February’s issue along with a fully-illustrated cover shown by Crunchyroll on Twitter.
This new one-shot chapter of the popular manga takes place after the events of the original series. The plot of the new chapter has yet to be released, but the creators teased that it would involve Ryuk’s Death Note falling to Earth yet again.
The manga officially ended in 2006, but the very first one-shot chapter was released two years later in 2008. This chapter was something like an epilogue to the original series. Near is on the hunt for a new Death Note-wielding Kira, who targets the elderly in hopes of ending their suffering. The popular anime ran from 2006-2007, but it continues to gain popularity — especially after the release of the live-action remake in 2017.
Death Note follows Light Yagami, an elite yet bored student, and Ryuk, a shinigami Death God. When Light finds a Death Note, a notebook that brings death to whoever’s name is written inside; he decides to change the world by executing the wicked so justice can prevail. A cat and mouse game ensues as an eccentric detective, L, hunts for Light, and the truth behind the deaths.
The Death Note anime is available on Netflix and Crunchyroll, and Netflix made a live-action adaptation. Check out our review of it here (Spoiler alert: we were not a fan of Netflix’s take on the source material).
