Dark Horse Comics is working with acclaimed horror author Adam Cesare to bring his first original comic to life. According to Bleedingcool, the four-issue series titled Dead Mall is written by Cesare with art from David Stoll. The two work alongside letterer Justin Birch for the horror comic. It releases later this year from the publisher.

What is Dead Mall All About?

An official press release for the series offers a short synopsis of what readers can expect in the series. Dead Mall focuses on an abandoned mall, the Penn Mills Galleria. The mall is about to be demolished, and five teens decide to sneak in for one last look around. However, even though the mall has been closed for years, it is not completely abandoned. What begins as a fun-filled night soon becomes a shopping spree from Hell. The teens find themselves facing off against the horrors of the changing, living mall. Otherwise, they will be trapped within its walls forever.

How Did This Series Come To Be?

Cesare shares his thoughts on how this comic came to life. Some of his first ever comics were issues of Dark Horse Presents. So, to actually work with the publisher is surreal. As for Dead Mall, the horror author wants to tell a story that readers of his books can enjoy. However, he also didn’t want to make something that could be done in “prose” or traditional writing. That is how he came up with a “supernatural, monster-filled, body-horror-tinged combination of Chopping Mall and The Ruins.” Not to mention the mall in question is actually the narrator. It feels like something only comics can accomplish.

Adding his excitement, artist David Stoll says he was already a fan of Cesare when Dead Mall came to him. He is excited to dive into Cesare’s first foray into comics to see what he can do. He is not disappointed with the universe Cesare created and all the “worst dark, toothy, slimy things they conjured together on page.”

Dead Mall is on sale on October 26.
