DC Teen Titans Academy writer has announced that the series will come to an end this May. According to Bleeding Cool, Tim Sheridan tweeted out the news in response to some fan inquiry about upcoming storylines. He continued to confirm that the series’ 15th issue in May would be the last.

What is Teen Titans Academy?

The DC Teen Titans Academy series launched in March of last year. It followed several of the original Teen Titan’s members as they trained the next generation of superheroes. Returning members included Nightwing, Raven, Starfire, Cyborg, and Beast Boy. An underlying narrative for the series concerns the mysterious identity of Red X. Their identity will be revealed in the February 22 issue of the comic, Teen Titans Academy #12.

The April issue of the series is solicited as a “fresh start” for the superhero academy. Teen Titans Academy #14 sees the school get rebranded as simply “Titans Academy.” Dropping the “Teen” alludes to the series taking a more mature approach. However, that arc will not have the opportunity to be explored much.

Why Is It Being Cancelled?

So far, there hasn’t been much information on why DC has scrapped the series. In fact, the comic seemed to be doing well, according to Sheridan. Speaking to GamesRadar a few months ago, the writer shared how well the new series was going. He claimed that “DC has been nothing but supportive” of the new venture. Plus, the series saw “a lot of success right out of the gate.” Not to mention the surprise success of the digital Yearbook Annual.

While Sheridan had initially planned to exit the series after issue #12, DC convinced him to stay on. That is an odd move, considering the series has now been axed. Although perhaps this is all part of a larger plan that DC has in store for its heroes. The additional 2 issues may set up something much larger than the Academy. DC’s May 2022 solicitations may clear up what exactly is happening behind the scenes.
