DC Comics has had so many crossover events that it can be difficult to keep track of them all. While the heroes always prevail in the end, there’s always that “what if” question: What if the heroes failed to defend all that they hold dear, and how does one move on afterward? DC Comics has the answer to those questions in their one-shot series Tales of the Dark Multiverse, where writers and artists depict how events unfolded in an alternate universe.
DC Comics Revisits the Universe’s Blackest Night
After tackling classic storylines Knightfall and The Death of Superman, the next story is something a little more recent, but no less tragic. 2009’s Blackest Night brought the entire DC Universe together to fend off an attack by the Black Lantern Corps. Determined to wipe out life across the cosmos, black power rings found and reanimated dead heroes and villains. A coalition of all seven Lantern Corps in the universe led the charge against the Black Lanterns. While the heroes ultimately won, evil came close to extinguishing the light of life throughout the DC Comics universe.
DC Comics’ Tales of the Dark Multiverse: Blackest Night is an alternate retelling of the 2009 event. When Thaal Sinestro obtains the white light of creation, he believes himself the greatest Lantern of all. In the original event, Sinestro shares his power with Green Lantern Hal Jordan, who uses it to turn the tide of the battle. However, the Dark Multiverse version sees Sinestro attempt to win the battle single-handedly. However, he cannot wield the power effectively and fails. Due to his mistake, the embodiment of the white light of life, The Entity, is destroyed. Subsequently, the DC Comics universe falls victim to the Black Lantern Corps. A little over three weeks later, Sinestro leads a small group to try and give the universe one last chance at survival.
