Aquaman is reimagined as a psychological horror in upcoming DC Black Label Miniseries. CBR has revealed that Ram V. and Christian Ward will team up for Aquaman: Andromeda. The miniseries will consist of three issues and will take DC’s Aquaman to the very bottom of the ocean.

What Do You Mean Psychological Horror?

Aquaman: Andromeda follows a group of scientists in an experimental submarine known as the Andromeda. This submarine utilizes an engine powered by a black hole that allows it to travel deep within the ocean’s depths. While exploring Point Nemo, the scientists discover something otherworldly.

An official synopsis reads, “Deep in the Pacific Ocean, at the farthest possible distance from any land, sits Point Nemo: the spaceship graveyard. Since the dawn of the space race, the nations of the world have sent their crafts their on splashdown to sink beneath the silent seas. But there is something…else at Point Nemo. A structure never made by human hands. And that structure seems to be…waking up.”

Of course, this strange oceanic phenomenon draws the attention of Black Manta and Aquaman. All parties are soon pulled into a horror they couldn’t possibly perceive. This will be Arthur Curry’s darkest story yet.

Who is Responsible for DC’s Aquaman Going Dark?

This adult-only series comes from the mind of Ram V. with art from the uber-talented Christian Ward. Ram is probably most known for his work on Venom and The Many Deaths of Laila Starr. Meanwhile, Ward has contributed art to iconic series like Suicide Squad and the Invisible Kingdom.

Speaking to CBR, the duo shared how they tackled Curry’s splash into horror. Ram V. stated that he “looked at all the stuff that had come before” involving DC’s Aquaman. This allowed him to ask the question, “What can we do that hasn’t been done?”. He wanted to offer something that had not been done before.

Meanwhile, Ward shares that he wanted to do something “visually that’s not been seen.” A challenging task when handling an iconic character like Aquaman. However, the collaboration between the two resulted in something truly unique; An Aquaman psychological horror.

What is DC Black Label?

This spookier take on an Aquaman story is part of the prestigious DC Black Label. The DC offshoot was established back in 2018 to publish titles deemed more mature than traditional comics. Some notable titles include Batman: Damned, Batman: Three Jokers, and Batman/Catwoman.

As part of Black Label, each issue of Aquaman: Andromeda will be 48-pages and have a larger print size. The first issue will release on June 7.
